The Sethi Brief

Money got dearer everywhere at once this autumn, and the first cracks showed in the weakest corners of the AI trade, not in India.

Five things

  1. RBI hiked. Repo up 25bp to 5.50% on 7 Oct, the first hike since Feb 2023. September CPI then printed 5.54%, food 7.74%. Next MPC 2–4 Dec. ✔
  2. Foreigners are still leaving. FPIs sold ₹44,166–47,417 crore of Indian equities in October to about 12 Oct. Calendar-2026 outflow is about ₹3.05 lakh crore. ✔
  3. IDBI goes private, to a foreigner. Cabinet cleared Fairfax buying 60.72% for ₹52,878 crore at ₹81 a share on 14 Oct. RBI, CCI and the share purchase agreement are still pending. ✔
  4. AI credit cracked at the edges. CoreWeave fell 15.5% on 14 Oct and its 2032 bond yields about 14.8% ◐. Oracle fell nearly 9% the same day ✔. Korea's AI-chip rout spread across Asia ✔.
  5. US inflation ran hot. September CPI 3.7%, core 2.6%, gasoline +9.1% in the month. ✔ The Fed meets 27–28 Oct; one outlet says markets moved toward a hike ◐.

World

Ukraine and Russia. Two separate stories, two verdicts.

Europe. France's 10-year spread over Germany topped 150bp in early October, the widest since 2011–12; its 10-year yield neared 5% ✔. The 2027 budget debate began 13 Oct with no majority ◐. EU and Chinese trade ministers met 8–9 Oct and agreed to ease rare-earth licensing, with no volume commitments ✔.

Middle East. Two items.

China. The US–China truce runs to 10 Jan 2027 ✔. The late-September Trump–Xi summit extended the framework; chips stayed off the readouts ◐. Fusion: the BEST reactor in Hefei is past halfway, with a power demo targeted around 2030. Not "infinite energy" ◐.

Americas. The Fed hiked in September ✔, to 3.75–4.00% on 16 Sep ◐. The S&P 500 fell 1.11% to 7,718.94 on 14 Oct, its worst day in over two months; Nasdaq −1.88% ◐. Government funded to 11 Dec, so no shutdown before the midterms ◐. Midterms 3 Nov; Democrats lead the generic ballot by about 9 ✔. Brazil's runoff is 25 Oct: Flavio Bolsonaro about 47% in round one, Lula about 45% ✔.

Horn of Africa. Eritrean troops are in Tigray, up to 38 miles deep by Ethiopia's account. Ethiopia invoked self-defence at the UN; Eritrea calls that a declaration of war ✔. Watch Red Sea shipping.

Japan. The BOJ raised rates to 1.25% in September, the highest since 1995. The yen hit about 164 per dollar before a joint US–Japan intervention; now about 156–158 ◐.

Money

The AI trade. Three distinct things, not one.

Bitcoin. Traded $80,226 to $84k this week, under $81k on 13 Oct ✔. Spot ETFs lost about $679M in the week to 9 Oct and $261M on 14 Oct ◐. Strategy bought only 250 BTC in the week to 11 Oct, its smallest buy of the year ◐. MSCI on Strategy is unresolved: ROIC and Saylor say a decision on 16 Oct; a 2 Sep report says the November review. JPMorgan estimates $2.8B of outflows if Strategy is removed ◐. The CLARITY Act stalled ✔: cloture failed 49–50 on 15 Sep ◐; not dead, but the calendar is tight.

Gold and silver. Gold about $4,145–4,177 and silver about $56.90–57.97 on 15 Oct, rebounding after a sharp fall ✔. Gold is well below its 2026 peak of $5,586.20. No driver was explained; rising rates and yields are the likely suspect ?.

Editor's read

The one fact of the past month: money got more expensive everywhere at once. The RBI hiked on 7 Oct. The Fed hiked in September, then got a hot CPI. The BOJ's rate is the highest since 1995. US 10-year yields touched a two-decade high. Assets that run on cheap money took the hit. Bitcoin is boxed in the low 80s, gold sits far below its peak, and the levered AI names cracked first: CoreWeave did, while Nvidia, per Sky News, was still near a record.

India looks like a refuge only from far away. Large-cap IT rallied, but smallcaps fell 1.31% the same day and foreigners keep selling. That is the detail for your book. None of this is a reason to sell in a panic. It is a reason to skip new lottery tickets: Zetwerk closes 19 Oct, before the Fed; size any Anthropic allotment as a lottery ticket, as Patrick Boyle argues.

Watch two things first: the Fed on 28 Oct, and whether CoreWeave and Oracle credit keeps widening. If both go wrong, the AI unwind stops being an edge story.

Sources and method

Thirty YouTube videos (published 1 Sep–15 Oct) were transcribed with Whisper and digested claim by claim, each tagged fact or opinion. Two web research desks, India and World, ran on 15–16 Oct; a second pass corrected the Oracle downgrade date and the S&P close, and resolved Starlink, US government funding, US CPI and the Israel election date. This edition carries 39 ✔ marks and 40 ◐ marks. Everything is search-snippet level: nothing acted on should skip a primary check. Hossenfelder's transcript is usable only for its first two minutes.
